Learn To Face Fear

Learn to face fear

We are all afraid of something. We have some fears since we were little, such as the fear of spiders. Other times we develop them little by little through our growth and because of our experiences, such as the fear of failure. This emotion is a psychological adaptation that we experience since the beginning of evolution and, to a large extent, it has been an important part for the human being to advance and evolve.

Fear can be a major obstacle to our growth, and to move forward, we must also learn to face it. When we allow fear to stop us, we can stand still for a long time and thus inadvertently let go of our goals.

Rational fear vs. irrational fear

The first thing we must do to face fear is to identify whether it is a rational or irrational fear. Rational fear is the one that arises from an event or situation that is really putting us in danger. An example would be encountering a snowstorm when we are driving on the highway. On the other hand, irrational fear is one that arises from some situation or object that cannot actually cause us harm, such as darkness.

When we identify the type of fear that is afflicting us, it will be easier to see the solution. For example, a rational fear can help us find a way out of that situation that can harm us. Irrational fear can paralyze us and prevent us from moving forward, without really having a real cause.

Prepare for the moment when fear attacks you

If you know, or at least suspect, that you will be in the situation that causes you fear, it is important that you prepare to face it. Rational fear can be combated with some precautionary measures, while irrational fear requires deep analysis or introspection – as it can be a phobia or other psychological disorder, and usually  requires consultation with a specialist . Think about what is really generating that fear in you and then remember the times when you have had to face that situation and how everything has turned out in the end.

Face the situation that generates fear

If your fear is rational, such as driving through a storm, you just need to take precautionary measures. If one day you find yourself in that situation, but you have insurance for your car and you have informed yourself about what to do, you will have the possibility to face the situation and get out of it without problems.

If you have an irrational fear of the dark, you can try putting yourself in that situation. You can start small, like staying in a dark room for a few minutes until you get used to the situation, and build this test until you get over your fear. Remember that it is always recommended that the use of this type of technique be supervised by a health professional.

Facing and defeating fear is up to you

We all have fears and it is important that we learn to combat them and use them to our advantage.
